Zuckerberg Assembles Elite Team to Forge Groundbreaking 'Superintelligence'

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally recruiting top experts to develop a “superintelligence,” machines surpassing human capabilities, Bloomberg reports. Frustrated with Meta’s AI progress, particularly the setbacks with its Llama 4 model, Zuckerberg has hosted meetings at his Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto homes to attract talent. Meta and Zuckerberg did not respond to requests for comment.

Despite integrating AI into Facebook, WhatsApp, Ray-Ban glasses, and chatbots, Meta trails behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT dominance. Zuckerberg’s new initiative involves hiring about 50 specialists and restructuring Meta’s Menlo Park headquarters to place the AI team near his office, according to Bloomberg sources. The New York Times reports that Scale AI’s 28-year-old CEO, Alexandr Wang, is involved, with Meta considering billions in investment.

Funded by Meta’s advertising revenue, the project’s integration with Meta’s existing AI division remains unclear. Zuckerberg’s push follows OpenAI’s advancements, intensifying his drive to transform Meta into an AI powerhouse despite mixed results.

The “superintelligence” goal hinges on achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a milestone debated among researchers, with timelines ranging from years to unattainable. Meta faces fierce competition from Microsoft-backed OpenAI, Alphabet, xAI, Anthropic, and a late-starting Apple. Zuckerberg’s open-source Llama aims to be AI’s Android, but rivals threaten Meta’s relevance as AI reshapes tech landscapes—Google’s search, Apple’s apps, and beyond.
